ReviewsWhitelaw, Stella - 'Veil of Death' This appears to be the first standalone crime novel from the author of the Jordan Lacey series. VEIL OF DEATH is set in Cornwall and revolves around the wedding of Fiona Kimberley to Hal Vaughan. The Vaughans are the richest family in the area and own a huge mansion. Their gift to the happy couple is a £300,000 bungalow. Fiona is young, beautiful and clever but not well liked. She has stirred up the enmity of many of those attending or assisting the wedding, from the florist to the best man and even the bridegroom and his father have reasons to hate her. So which one of them was angry enough to stab her whilst she was changing into her going away outfit? Each of the main suspects, as it were, are given a chapter to reveal their connection to the family and what their motive would be and what murder weapon they were carrying before heading up to Fiona's bedroom. This is a very enjoyable, cosy type of book and in a glorious setting. There is no police or amateur detection and no way of guessing what actually happened only by turning the pages as fast as possible. Through the device of showing the wedding and prior events through the eyes of each character, the family and their relationships came to life. Recommended. Karen Meek, England |
